Young detective Park Sun Woo and Seo Do-Cheol, a veteran of the Violent Crimes Investigation Division team, hunt a serial killer who turns their world upside down. This is followed by Chạy Đâu Cho Thoát (2015). Ryoo Seung-wan’s sequel to his 2015 action comedy Veteran is a fast-paced crime thriller that reteams with Hwang Jung-min and a stellar supporting cast, with expectedly satisfying results. The film focuses on a team of old-school cops who often use violent methods in their work. But they get results, and their superiors trust them. Hwang reprises his role as Do-cheol, arguably the most skilled of the group. He closely resembles the character of Ma Dong-seok from the Roundup series, a simple guy who knows his job and has his own way of doing it, but isn’t afraid to have some fun now and then. The team’s skills are put to the test when a serial killer reveals himself to the public and, annoyingly, is constantly called out by some pesky live streamers. Ryoo once again leads the film with plenty of energy and stylistic verve, definitely upping his game after the mediocre Smugglers. It seems he’s at his safest when directing powerful action thrillers like this one, spicing the action with humor but not being afraid to darken the tone when necessary. And so it is here; I, the Executioner is reminiscent of The Unjust in the way it questions morality and tests the judgement of a desperate cop. The plot offers a fascinating examination of vigilantism and how it can be perceived as just in the public eye, but trusts that the viewer knows better. And hopefully we do. To balance out all the killing, there are the aforementioned humorous moments that can lighten the mood and fit quite well. Plus, like the Roundup series, there are plenty of great chases and emotional action scenes, culminating in a dramatic sequence full of well-deserved fistfights. Highly recommended for fans of crime thrillers.
